# Japan Part-time Work Check

> Free, unofficial checker for Japan's permission to work outside your status of residence (資格外活動許可): can this status do this part-time job or side gig, which permission is needed (comprehensive 28-hour or individual), are the hours within the limits, and the 2026-10-01 change for pachinko, mahjong and game centers. Rules as of 2026-10-26.

## Rules applied
- Comprehensive permission (包括許可): Student (留学), Dependent (家族滞在), Designated Activities (dependent of a foreign national; continued job hunting / waiting to join). Up to 28 hours in any 7-day period, all jobs combined. Students: up to 8 hours a day during the school's official long vacation. Card stamp: 許可：原則週28時間以内・風俗営業等の従事を除く.
- Banned for every permission outside status, every role (incl. dishwashing, cleaning): 風俗営業 (hosting bars, low-light bars, booth seating; pachinko, mahjong, game centers), 特定遊興飲食店営業, sex-related businesses.
- NEW 2026-10-01: Dependent (家族滞在) holders only may work at venues licensed under 風営法 art. 2(1)(iv)/(v) (pachinko, mahjong, game centers) with an individual permission per venue, even if they already hold the comprehensive permission. Needs employer pledge + applicant pledge, copy of the venue license, document on duties/hours/pay, proof of other side-job hours; all side jobs ≤ 28 h/week. - Contractor delivery paid per job: comprehensive permission only if hours can be objectively confirmed; freelance/contract work with unclear hours: individual permission; company, staff or office: change to Business Manager (経営・管理).
- Student internships over 28 h/week: individual permission for final-year undergrads (~90%+ credits), final-year master's/PhD, or credit-bearing practicums.
- Work visas: same-field work needs no permission; work of another work status (e.g. Professor teaching at a language school) needs individual permission; simple-labor side jobs generally not permitted.
- Specified Skilled Worker, Technical Intern Training, Temporary Visitor: no side jobs. Working Holiday: work allowed without cap except 風俗営業 venues. Permanent Resident, Spouse or Child of Japanese/PR, Long-Term Resident: no limit.
- Procedure: Regional Immigration Services Bureau, no fee, standard processing 2 weeks to 2 months; students entering for 3+ months can get the comprehensive permission at the airport.
